Carrick in Connacht Final Held in Headford
The Under-12 boys of Carrick NS played in the pioneer soccer competition held in Headford on Saturday last. The boys had previously qualified from the event earlier in the summer by winning the county final in Tuam. The first game was against Charlestown which Carrick NS won 1-0. The goal scorer was Conor Hussey. The net minder was Caoileann Fitzmaurice who had an excellent game and made many great saves to give Carrick NS victory. The second team opponent was Taughmaconnell and again Carrick NS emerged victorious by winning 6-5. This game was a very tight game and exciting to watch. Both teams played excellent football. This game was keenly fought in all areas and with John Finan, and Brian Neary in defence and kept Carrick NS in the game. Darragh Burke in the forwards and Conor Hussey in centre field complimented each other well. Brendan Connolly had a wonderful game in this match and put in some excellent tackles on the Taughmaconnell team while Michael Flynn set up some lovely chances for his team mates. Both team managers expressed the opinion that this was the game of the day for some wonderful football played in a very sportsman’s like manner. The final against Ballina was played out in the afternoon in brilliant sunshine and though tired Carrick NS played with great determination and heart. Unfortunately they conceded two early goals the boys fought back in the second half to go 2-1 but Ballina were the stronger team and ended the game on a score of 3-1. The boys had a great day of football and fun and thanks to the parents who travelled with the team to Headford. The day ended with refreshments in Supermacs in Tuam and all players had worked up an appetite for chips and drinks. Thanks to Mrs Cheevers NT and to the pioneer organisers for a well organised event.
